Homemade Laundry Detergent & Fabric Softener

With three young children, a husband in construction and a yard full of chickens and goats, laundry is something you can’t ignore in our home.
Lots of loads of laundry equals a bunch of detergent to buy and I don’t have to tell you detergents can be expensive. I tried the whole coupon craze and it just wasn’t my thing. And, to be perfectly honest I tend to wash every other load at least twice… I’ll be going strong, on a roll and then… I just run out of gas. I don’t know about you, but when I run out of gas… There’s just nothing left. I clock-out and shut down. So, on top of being expensive I’m adding to the cost by (shamefully) wasting it on re-washing loads.
As Andy and I try to tackle this little life of ours and infuse bits of simplicity; we can’t ignore one of the most important reasons behind this little movement of ours.

You do know that most detergents and softeners found in the supermarkets today are filled with yucky chemicals!  Oh yeah, I am afraid it’s true.  And since we begin this whole healthier life thing… we are trying our hardest to eliminate chemicals from our home.

Now just let me say, we are not perfect here… Trying to eliminates chemicals from your home is completely overwhelming. But, with a little effort and simple baby steps, you too can begin the change. With a busy schedule and three kiddos living Simple and clean is the goal for our family. Baby steps for me equals simple. So, we will start small and we will shoot for being consistent successfully.

This week we tackled laundry detergents and softeners. Listed below are the recipes we used.

Homemade Laundry Detergent

1 cup Borax
1 cup washing soda
1 bar of soap
15-20 drops of Young Living Lavender essential oil

Grate bar of soap and combine all ingredients in an air tight container. Using 2 tbsp per load of laundry. This recipe is safe for HE machines and super cheap!

Now, in researching different recipes I came across many different opinions on using Borax in cleaners. Is it safe or is it not? Well, Borax is a natural substance. I suggest if it’s something that is of concern to you; you need to research and come to your own conclusion. It can be a bit confusing. Sorry, wish I had all the facts for you here. But, after reading many different opinions and facts, I can go to bed tonight knowing Borax is in my homemade laundry detergent. IF I change my mind… I will let you know!

Okay, so now for the fabric softener… Thank goodness this one wasn’t very complicated! In fact it was completely simple and I LOVE the fragrance it created.

Homemade Fabric Softener

2 cups of Epsom salt
10 drops of Young Living Lemon essential oil
20 drops of Young Living Lavender essential oil

Mix together well in a glass container. I choose a mason jar and used the lid for measuring. Half a cap full placed in your fabric softener compartment at same time washing detergent is added.

I tried my new concoctions on several loads of towels before I felt confident enough to use on our clothes…  And, I have to say that it works great and I am totally happy!  Things are getting a little more simple around here!

If you are feeling giddy, you should give it a try to concoct your own batch of homemade laundry detergent.  Most of the items you possibly already have on hand.  And with the essential oils, there are so many to choose from and mix together creating your signature scent.  If you gave it a try or have another recipe you would love to share ~ leave me a comment!  I would love to hear about your experience with homemade laundry detergent!
